Lesson One: Students will familiarize themselves to the article by analyzing the pictures within the story. Students will be asked specific questions as well as general questions about some of the pictures in the story.
Page 2-3: Who do you think Qaddafi is? What do you think the picture behind Qaddafi is trying to illustrate?
Page 4-5: Describe everything you see in this picture. What is this picture trying to tell you?
Page 6-7: Read the caption. Why do you think Qaddafi preaches a classless society?
Page 10: What is the main purpose of this map? By looking at this map can you tell what Libya’s main resource is?
Page 15: (lower right picture) What does this picture imply? Read the caption written in green. Why do you think Qaddafi would say this?
Page 16: Study the picture. Make a question you would ask after studying this picture.
Page 20: Look closely on the hillside. What do you see? Why do you think that is there?
**After analyzing the pictures students should have many other questions that will be answered after reading the article.

Lesson Two: Access the Power Point presentation located on this web page. The power point will give basic background necessary before you read the article. In the note section of the power point are detailed notes to accompany each slide. The information will give students a basic understanding of Libya and serve as wonderful introduction to the article. The power point also has a review to be used after the presentation.

Lesson Three: (you are ready to read the article)
Grouping Activity: (This is for a class of 30) To get students into groups you will use words that are associated with Libya and the article they are about to read. Students will work in pairs and will find their partner by matching their word with their partners. The following words should be put on index cards. (each word should be put on 2 index cards)

Jigsaw Activity:
Students will work in partners to complete the article in a jigsaw fashion. After each group reads their assigned section students should answer the 4 questions assigned to their reading. **Groups 13, 14, and 15 have one less question and could be used with lower ability students**
